Pfishing Attack on Columbia E-mail (@columbia.edu ONLY)

Read on for an important message from the Office of Alumni and Development at Columbia University. This only affects email accounts ending with "@columbia.edu".

Dear Columbian:

Keeping your information current at Columbia gives you access to old friends, new contacts, and exclusive opportunities. At the same time, the safeguarding of your personal information is important to us.

Recently, Columbia University has been the target of a "phishing" attack. A few Columbia e-mail-forwarding participants have received messages instructing them to report their password (via e-mail) or risk having their CubMail access disabled.

These messages seem to have been sent out to randomly generated UNIs@columbia.edu; no alumni data systems have been compromised.

Please do not respond to that e-mail or any like it.  Columbia University and The Columbia University Alumni Association of South Florida will never ask you for your password or any other private information (e.g. credit card number, social security number) in an e-mail message.

You can help protect yourself against identity theft by following these suggestions:

• Never send your password or social security number by e-mail to ANYONE

• Remember that banks and financial institutions will never ask for your account numbers, PIN, or passwords by e-mail

• Don't fall for stories about winning the lottery, money wiring, or any promises of money from relatives you are unaware of

• See
security.columbia.edu for other security information or use the "computer security" link under "quick links" on the e-mail & computing page

• If a particular message claims to be from Columbia, confirm the authenticity of that message by going to Columbia's
e-mail & computing page to examine the Service Alerts section.

If you have any questions about this issue, please contact our Help Desk for assistance at alumni-link@columbia.edu. You may also contact us via postal mail or phone using the information below.

With best wishes from your alumni association.
