Columbia University seeking student Internship Positions in Southern California
PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Columbia University Internship (CU IN) California Program is designed to offer undergraduate students high-quality internship experiences. The goal of the program is to help build students’ professional skill base and increase Columbia’s domestic presence and range of internship opportunities available to students. In developing CU IN California internships, The Center for Career Education (CCE) seeks employers in a wide array of industries in order to expose students to a variety of career options. In its inaugural year, CCE anticipates securing 12-20 internships across San Francisco and Los Angeles, including those in fields such as finance, the not-for-profit sector, technology, the arts, communications, media and start-ups. San Francisco and Los Angeles are very popular career destinations for our students. In the 2007 – 2008 Graduating Student Survey, San Francisco and Los Angeles ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively (behind New York) as their ideal location for post-graduation employment. Add to this the fact that 10% of undergraduates call California home and it is easy to see the value that a California internship program brings to both students and employers. PROGRAM BENEFITS
- A condensed recruiting process where position marketing and candidate vetting are handled for you, allowing you to expend fewer hiring resources. (Examples include resume/candidate screening)
- On-campus or teleconference interview scheduling handled by CCE
- Access to a highly diverse student population
- Most importantly, a competitive, intelligent, creative and professional Columbia University undergraduate who will make a valuable contribution with his or her skills and experience to the growth and development of your organization PROGRAM CONTENT Pre-departure training (Facilitated by CCE) Students selected for the program will participate in a one-day pre-departure training program provided by staff at the Center for Career Education. The goal of this program is two-fold: (1) to give student participants a first opportunity to network and build relationships with each other through dialogue and team building activities and (2) to provide soft-skills professional development to each student in order to better prepare them for their internship experience. This day of training will include the following activities:
- Logistical overview of the California Internship Program: An overview by a CCE staff member which includes information regarding the structure of the program, resources available to students in California (mentors, alumni, professional associations) and a strategy workshop on “How To Make The Most of Your Internship.”
- Professional Culture in California: A panel of Columbia alumni who worked/currently work in California intended to highlight to students the subtle differences of the culture in California compared to the East Coast.
- Pre-professional development skills classes to ensure success in student internships: A variety of workshops to address professionalism in the workplace across industries. Sessions include:
* Strategic and Effective Communication Program * Self-Care and Stress Management in a New Environment Program * Professional Etiquette in the Workplace * Goal Setting, Time and Focus Management * MBTI Interpretation to help students understand team and workplace dynamics
